High potential and gifted education

At Banksmeadow Public school, we follow the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy, which recognises the diverse strengths and needs of gifted and high potential students. Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment that challenges and extends all learners, ensuring they are engaged, motivated and able to reach their full potential. Our programs are designed to provide talent development pathways which allow students to achieve their potential across each of the four key domains, which are the creative, intellectual, physical and social-emotional domains. This reflects the Department’s emphasis on catering to the whole child.

At Banksmeadow Public School, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Our approach focuses on four key domains

Intellectual domain

Academic competitions such as the Maths Olympiad, Premier's Debating Challenge, and the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition are popular opportunities for our students each year. Children who are high potential or gifted in the intellectual domain are supported and extended through these programs.

Physical domain

Children who have high potential or are gifted in the physical domain are offered many sporting opportunities at Banksmeadow Public School, including PSSA, the Swimming Carnival, Athletics Carnival, and Cross Country Carnival, with students representing our school at both regional and state levels.

Creative domain

Many Creative Arts opportunities are available at Banksmeadow Public School. We have two school choirs, a Junior Dance group, a Senior Dance group, and an Art Club. Our classroom programs are tailored to support students who are high potential or gifted in the creative domain, giving them opportunities to shine.

Social-emotional domain

Children are also offered leadership opportunities through Peer Support, the SRC, the student leadership team, and house captain roles.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with  HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

Within the classroom, teachers at Banksmeadow Public School:

  • Differentiate learning experiences to create high challenge and engagement in learning
  • Support students to set independent learning goals based on teacher feedback, in order to reflect on and extend their learning
  • Use explicit teaching strategies to ensure that all students reach their full potential
  • Develop independent learning plans for students who require individualised support
  • Foster potential and create rich learning environments where all our students can thrive
